Across myriad industries, data is changing the way we do business, conduct research, interact, and govern. And as the field of Data Science continues to grow in prominence, it raises questions about the ethical use of new and existing data. San Diego is home to a large and dynamic data community, and we make it our goal at the Data Science Alliance to serve them.

To do so, we help connect people with one another, with resources, and with opportunities. We host events, promote education and awareness, and partner with others to ensure that the data science ecosystem is robust and continues to evolve. All this we do while championing Responsible Data Science, because we believe the future of data must be approached with responsibility and integrity.

Big Data Jobs

Our Responsible Data Project, a community-wide framework for responsible data science, is carried out with the goal of developing and implementing schemas that allow for the responsible cultivation, examination, and distribution of data. We believe that it is vital that these structures are rooted in philosophies of sustainability, innovation, and human rights, and that we approach all data projects adhering to the four pillars of transparency, equality, privacy, and veracity.

Defining the standard for responsible data science is something that we see as a community effort, and not something that can be accomplished in a silo. To be seen as a trusted source regarding data practices for the general public, DSA is harnessing the minds of San Diego’s business, academic, and technical communities, through the formation of a Responsible Data Science Working Group, providing technical and practical resources for responsible data. This Working Group will focus on advancing responsible data as a foundational practice within organizations.

Of course, success in actualizing change in this area goes beyond establishing a set of guidelines — we asked ourselves how current data practices could be modified to further promote responsibility and ethicality. We want to be known as a reliable source about data for the general public, one that will gain the trust of our community by illuminating and encouraging conversation around potential data concerns, breaches and violations. DSA will take an active role in the community, promoting education and awareness about data science as well as data rights and responsibilities.

Building a responsible data science community allows us to create technologies and reap all the benefits of data science without overlooking its harms. By bringing the power of data and data experts to enduring business, research, and community challenges, DSA sets standards, promotes education, and shapes policy — ultimately bringing people and data together to change the world.
