Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the hottest topic globally. There are many ways that AI can benefit our society, particularly in the healthcare industry. However, have we thought about the implications of all these exciting technological advancement.

- Genetic Engineering — AI can do more in-depth analysis on your genes to see your compatibility with medications to treat diseases.

It is important to note that these comments on AI transforming the healthcare industry, an assumption is that these clients/patients are willing to accept help; have access to technological devices; and that symptoms are physiological responses that is observable. What happens if these basic assumptions are violated?
In the field of child protection and as a worker in a statutory department, we work with clients who are unwilling to work with us. Some of our clients are also dependent on social welfare, and that they are limited to access any quality healthcare let alone advanced technology.
Let’s think about traumatic responses. When we have experienced traumatic events, particularly as an infant, we do not necessarily remember the event and describe them in words. Research in infants has shown that sensory memories are recorded before language, since it’s not yet developed when you are a newborn. Traumatized children are stuck in the ‘fear mode’ when they grow up. Their hyper-vigilance prevents them from filtering out irrelevant sensory experiences such as sights, sounds and textures. When traumatized children are stressed, they re-experience the bodily feeling of immediate danger, with no way to make sense of it or communicate it verbally as the memory has no language ‘attached’ to it. Traumatized children don’t know how to respond. So they either over- or under-respond, because there’s no middle ground. If you think about traumatized children, how do you necessarily diagnose them with AI? Their experience are varied between different forms of abuse and/or neglect.
Yes, AI will have a major impact on reforming the healthcare industry and humanity ultimately. However, this would require effort across the globe to introduce it. As long as there are inequality, AI does not necessarily benefit the entire human race, it only benefits the one who can afford it.
