Internet of Things: The next ecosystem of data mining

The smart home, the next untapped innovation.

Imagine a not so distance future where the produce you eat is entirely farmed by machines. The weather predictions are accurate. Drone are flying around acting as the new package delivery system. Virtual assistance so advance that replace human assistance to the point we can’t tell if it is a person or a human speaking to us. Imagine an eco system of all your devices all working together; interlinked by a your user account.

This a future not too far off from reality. Machine Learning is being used everywhere. As internet connection become more accessible and faster than ever. ‘Smart devices’, robots, virtual assistance are appearing everywhere. In this second article of the Data Revolution Series we take a look at how IoT data is shaping how we interact with technology everywhere. This technological ecosystem will be so interconnected that nearly everything we use; be it electronic, robotic, or virtual will have the bases of machine learning built into the system.

Personal Assistant for the home.

Let’s take a step back and imagine the modern home. You wake up to sound of an alarm clock and hear the voice of virtual assistant (let’s call her Jasmine). She’s letting you know the time date and asks ‘How you are this morning?’. You answer as if she was real. You get ready for your morning run, you put on your smart runners which allow you to keep track of your run, pace, calories burnt and other useful information to your smart watch. The smart watch isn’t only a simple smart watch it also allows you to communicate with Jasmine to unlock your home with a simple voice command. As you enter in your home you smell the aroma of coffee. Jasmine was brewing it while you were on the run. She lets you know that you are out of coffee and ask you if you’d like to order a new roost or have the same one delivered to your door. You order it and the online store will notify you when the delivery drone has dropped off the package.

Autonomous Vehicle for your virtual assistant all working together.

As you sip your coffee you turn on your wall panel acts a huge monitor recommending various videos of newsreels all cur-rated just to your liking. As you realize the time Jasmine reminds you are late for work, as usual, you rush to the shower and you put on your cloths. As you are getting ready you ask Jasmine to warm up the electric car. As you dash down stairs your phone’s navigation system calculates the fastest route to work with the current traffic. As you get your hair ready for work and straighten your cloths you place the car in auto pilot. Rushing to your works building you just make it to the 9am meeting.

As you read the story above many these devices are already playing into our future lives. All of the technologies mentioned in the story are already placed in our life one way or another. It just is a matter of time before the are common. IoT data will be implemented into nearly every device we use. The way you interact with your devices will dictate the way the machines learning algorithms predict your behavior. All of this data produced will be used one.
