Will You Lose Your Job Because of AI?

--

Remember how in your childhood people asked you questions like: “Who do you want to be in the future?” and “What would you like to do when you grow up?” No matter if you were dreaming of becoming an astronaut or president of Neverland, your parents always reassured you that you could do it. Living in the era of digital advancements, the future does not seem to be that reassuring anymore. Some of the professions will presumably vanish and some will be taken by the intelligent machines.

We recognize the first steps of the AI taking up some of the jobs that are based on automation. Soon enough, the list of these jobs will increase. You won’t be able to promise your kid that the profession they choose will still be available for humans. We might face the reality where robots will be our colleagues and bosses. Hopefully, it will lead to more effectiveness and cost efficiency but at the same time, people will lose their jobs. Should you start thinking about it now or are we talking about a distant future? There is no specific answer to that but it won’t hurt to get prepared for the world of the future today. Let’s look at the jobs that might be not the best choice for you.

Online customer service

Developers are working hard to improve the quality of chatbots’ performance. It does not mean that all of the online support managers should be concerned. The most we can expect from the chatbots in the nearest future is coping with the basic inquiries. There is much that we can do to improve the language processing and image recognition to create the algorithms that are really helpful. In the end, it will always be a human manager you will interact with after being headed the right way by a chatbot.

Mortgage broker

The analysis of applications takes a lot of time. It is important to make sure you take all the factors into consideration and make the right decision. AI can be of great help when it comes to probability computation and analysis. The software that can give you all the data with logical conclusions can save your time. There is no a considered opinion on whether AI will become just a tool in the hands of a mortgage broker or will be able to take his/her place. We’ll see.

Accountant

Robots have some of the indisputable advantages over humans. They can work longer and show better results. An accountant can’t spend 24 hours a day calculating and filling in tables in excel as a human brain needs to have a break. Humans are also more likely to make mistakes in their computations no matter how good we are with numbers. If we manage to make AI do all the exhausting computational tasks for us, there will be a new generation of accountants who are more accurate, have better processing power, and always ready to assist.

Taxi driver

All the companies are preoccupied with the cost efficiency opportunities. Teaching a machine to drive people to wherever they want is definitely one of them. There will be no need for taxi drivers and clients won’t have to listen to their anecdotes. Everyone will benefit as the service will be cheaper and the operating costs will decrease. Everyone except for the taxi drivers that is. It is rather doubtful that this technology of autonomous cars will develop so quickly as we imagine.

The probable scenario that would still allow companies save money and let taxi drivers keep their jobs exist. There can be a person behind a driverless car who makes sure everything goes as it should. The remote control option will give companies an opportunity to hire someone from the countries with lower wage rates. In this case, a passenger will not have to worry about the safety as it is not only an AI that will be responsible for their safety.

Who Won’t Be Affected (Yet)

We can assume that the jobs where a wrong decision can cause dangerous and irreversible consequences will not be open for AI in the nearest future. Doctors, for example, need to have a direct contact with their patients and use their experience to come up with the most probable diagnosis. What AI can offer are some insights based on the statistical data. However, there will always have to be a human who takes the responsibility and decides what is best for others.
